Exploring Career Options (ORIN 161)

Jeff’s academic interests range from English to art. His personal interests include rock climbing and hiking. His options confuse him. He’s afraid he’ll have to pick just one interest to pursue because he doesn’t know of any career that would allow him to combine these interests.

This course helps students identify their interests, abilities, and personal characteristics, as well as top career prospects and career requirements. It also assists with the development of a career vision statement and networks students with individuals in a similar career.

Becoming Career Ready (ORIN 162)
Pam has always been fascinated with machinery and processes. She even designed a way to reduce the inventory in her father’s business. She’s been thinking about becoming an industrial engineer, but she’s concerned about her lack of math skills.

This course assesses a student’s strengths and weaknesses, helps develop a personal plan of action to address those needs, supports the plan through training, group sessions, and individual attention, and monitors the student’s progress.

Finding the First Job (ORIN 164)
Kristen is a communications major. Her summer jobs with the local radio and TV stations have given her hands-on experience and good references to put on her résumé. However, she wants to work for a broadcasting company in a larger city.

This course helps students develop a strategy for gaining experience through summer jobs, co-ops, internships, and volunteer opportunities. It also covers résumé writing, conducts mock interviews, develops a job search and time management plan, helps find personal referrals and references, and provides strategies that identify specific companies to contact.

Starting Your Career (ORIN 165)
Jon has received an offer from a firm he wants to work for. He’s excited and looking forward to starting his job soon. In the meantime, he needs to move, find a place to live, buy a car, and set up a bank account.

This course helps students develop a strategy for starting their career and create a five-year financial plan. In addition, there are discussions to help students cope with typical job and life issues.
